Dedicated Server
A dedicated server is a physical computer that is mounted in a rack in one of our data center facilities. It has physical resources such as CPU, Memory (RAM), Storage (Hard drives), etc. Unlike our VPS's, the physical servers resources are not shared amongst our other customers - they are all "dedicated" to the physical server itself. Advantages to having a dedicated server is:
- Physical resources are not shared with any other customer
- With a dedicated server, you won't be affected by any scheduled maintenance/upgrades that may be required for our VPS plans
- You can have a more customized setup with a dedicated server
- As you get into needing a higher spec server, our Dedicated Servers are much more cost effective than the same resource levels for our VPS plans
Some disadvantages are:
- Resource upgrades take longer than with our VPS plans as the physical server must be shutdown, un-racked, resources changed, re-racked then booted back up.
- For lower spec requirements, not as cost affective
- Backups are not included in the plan price (We do offer offsite backups for our Dedicated Servers)
VPS Servers
A VPS server is a server that is virtualized, running on a physical server. With our VPS's, you still will get dedicated resources, but the overall resources are shared on a physical server. This is not to be confused with a shared server - which we don't offer. Shared servers have their actual resources shared amongst the clients on that physical node - meaning you and other clients may be sharing the limit of 2GB of Memory (RAM) for example. Som advantages are:
- Easily upgrade and downgrade server resources as needed
- Installations of new operating systems is very quick and can be re-installed as needed
- Much more cost affective for lower spec requirements
- Free weekly backups included at no cost
Some disadvantages are:
- Depending on any maintenance/upgrades required for the backend node, the VPS may be affected
- Custom server requirements are better suited for a dedicated server
