How to view resource usage on your Windows Server

Sometimes, your Windows Server may be having performance issues or running slowly. To help diagnose what may be causing the issue, we will use the Task Manager.

The task manager will allow you to view and end running processes, check the resource usage and view, disconnect and log off users.

To open the Task Manager, goto your Start menu and search for "Task Manager". Once opened, you may need to click the "More Details" button at the bottom left of the Window to get more information about the system.

  1. Use the Processes tab to view running processes. If you see a process you don't want running, or one that is stuck you highlight it and click the "End Task" button to kill it.
  2. Use the Performance tab to view the resource usage on your server. This includes CPU, Memory (RAM) and Network. Here, you'll be able to see what resource is causing performance issues on your server.
  3. Use the Users tab to view users that are diconnected (inactive session - not logged out) or logged in. You can sign a user out by highlighting their username and clicking "Log Out"
  4. Use the Details tab for a more in-depth view into the running processes on your system. Processes can be killed here as well
  5. Use the Services tab to see what services, or daemons, are running on your system. Services can be stopped, started or restarted.

From the above, we can see the task manager is very useful in system administration for your Windows VPS.
